Making claims

The gold standard for making claims

The difference between religious/cult and scientific claims is that science bends to transparent reason while religion is blind, unquestioning faith.

The principle of falsifiability, propounded by Karl Popper, is the loftier expression of the same principle; for a theory to be considered scientific, it must state the circumstances under which it is wrong. When you make a scientific claim, you have to include what observations or events would disprove your theory, otherwise join a seminary.

But, at the level at which we mere mortals work, let’s bring the same rigour of thinking to making claims.

A claim, to qualify as a claim, and not some random abusive rant must meet the following conditions;

  1. It takes a position, a stance : I can run the fastest - win gold at the Olympics like Usain Bolt.
  2. It is not a fact - water boils at 100 degrees C at sea level, laws of physics, etc.
  3. It is testable - what would prove to you that your claim is wrong? If your answer is nothing, you’re not making a claim, you’re expressing faith. Stand beside the pedo.”
  4. It needs evidence - The Gaza “event” meets the criteria for genocide; the UN agree, they have all the evidence, look it up.

Now, let’s discuss your objection to my claim.
